This Armored SeaRobin was captured on video strolling across the ocean floor near Miller's Ledge. SeaRobins have hard scut-like scales and are often found "walking" across the bottom along the continental slope at depths of 150-800 ft. With the complete absence of light at these depths and with red light being scattered most by sea water, their red color actually makes them harder to see. SeaRobins subsist on a diet of small crustaceans and other benthic organisms. Miller's Ledge is a spectacular feature cutting across the southern portion of the Tortugas South Ecological Reserve. This wall-like feature is actually a paleo-shoreline left over from the last ice age when sea levels were markedly lower. The crest of this wall now lies under 450 ft. of ocean while its base is just over 750 ft. deep. Video provided by: Doug Weaver, FGBNMS |
